Exfoliation is a natural process of your skin cells, the cells on upper layers of your skin to turn over, and are shed in the process of producing new and healthy cells. Part of this process also stimulates new collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. On the face this encourages a slight thickening and tightening of the skin which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and some of the other effects of skin aging.

Retinol is a chemical exfoliating compound that is available in stores and through Simmons Plastic Surgery. It is most often found in various creams and gels that can be applied to trouble spots on the skin on your face, chest, neck, shoulders and hands.

When a Retinol cream is applied directly to the skin it interacts with your epithelial cells to create retinoic acid. This encourages the skin cells to exfoliate and regenerate new, healthy skin cells.

It’s important to note that there is a difference between retail level retinol, which is available to the average consumer and the compound known as Retin-A, which is only available from a prescription from Simmons Plastic Surgery.

Retin-A is essentially a much more powerful version of retinol. It also can help with the reduction of dark spots and other types of skin discoloration. Since it could cause dryness and minor skin irritation it’s use needs to be monitored and advised by a trained physician. Most people use retinol products for basic exfoliation before turning to stronger Retin-A based creams and gels.
