Stimulating Exfoliation Is Helpful for Reducing the Appearance of Aging Skin

The natural processes of aging affect the skin in several ways. As the years go by, your skin decreases in collagen production in the deeper layers of the dermis. At the same time, exfoliation also slows. This decreased replacement of older skin cells with younger cells can cause lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, there are several different methods for reducing this appearance of aging skin.

Here at Simmons Plastic Surgery, our cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Oliver P. Simmons, might recommend starting with one of our high-quality retinol or prescription-strength Retin-A skin creams. The special agents in these creams are designed to stimulate exfoliation. This increases the rate old skin cells are replaced and it encourages new collagen production in the deeper layers of the dermis.

If you’re not satisfied with your results from a retinol cream, we might suggest a prescription Retin-A fortified skin cream. Since Retin-A can sometimes cause skin dryness, it needs to be prescribed so we can periodically monitor the health of your skin.

If our potent skin creams don’t meet your goals, our cosmetic surgeon might recommend a microdermabrasion treatment. This involves using a cylindrical glass wand with aluminum oxide crystals to hyper-stimulate exfoliation and open pores. This can help reduce future acne breakouts.
