For a woman who has lost one or both breasts due to cancer or another condition, breast reconstruction is a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure. If you choose to have breast reconstruction, you should do it for yourself, not to fit someone else’s desires or to try to try to achieve the so-called ideal image. Breast reconstruction may be a good choice for you if:
- You are able to cope with your diagnosis and treatment
- You do not have any illnesses or medical conditions that would impair healing
- You have realistic goals and a positive outlook for restoring your breast and body image
Breast reconstruction is usually performed in multiple stages. Dr. Oliver P. Simmons may begin your treatment at the same time as mastectomy (the surgical removal of one or both breasts that is usually performed to treat breast cancer). However, our plastic surgeon may choose to delay treatment until you heal from mastectomy and recover from any other cancer treatments.
Make sure that you feel ready for the emotional adjustment involved, as it may take some time to accept the results. Even though this surgery can give you a relatively natural-looking breast, a reconstructed breast never looks or feels exactly the same as the breast that was removed.
